In astrology, the asteroid Itokawa is named in honour of Dr. Hideo Itokawa.
His asteroid is used to highlight astronomical or rocketry discoveries and advances. He is affectionately called “Dr. Rocket” because on April 12, 1955. he led his fellow scientists in launching the tiny rocket called Pencil, a miniscule thing about 23CM in length of 9 inches, in the suburbs of Tokyo. That chart, with a sunrise time, is here.
Dr. Itokawa was born July 20, 1912 and reposed eighty-seven years later on February 21, 1999 in Tokyo. The UK Independent disputes this and lays claim to 1913.
He is the founder of the Japanese Space Program. Not much more is known about him, so this chart is rather speculative. Perhaps, if I am lucky, it will be close enough.

Astrologically Dr. Rocket
Dr. Itokawa was impressed by Charles Lindbergh’s feat in making a non- stop flight from New York to Paris in the Spirit of St Louis in 1927. Inspired by Lindbergh’s feat, he was determined to build planes in Japan.
He attended Tokyo University, and joined what was then known as the Nakajima Airplane Company (now Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd). Japan was a world leader in aircraft construction, exemplified by their surprise attack on Pearl Harbour, Hawaii on December 7, 1941.
The Hayabusa Project
As part of Nakajima, Dr. Itokawa helped to design the Ki-43 “Hayabusa” fighter plane, code named “Oscar” by the Allies. The Hayabusa was one of the most produced Japanese planes for WWII. After the war it was retired and kept in Chinese inventory and saw battle again for the French in the IndoChinese War against the Viet Minh rebels.
It was a visit to America for a conference where he first started reading about the Space Race and this reignited his old passion for space craft and upon his return to Tokyo began his work on the Pencil.
Acoustical Patents
After he retired he became interested in ballet and the violin. Attached is his patent for a “stringed instrument for use with a bow” that was published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society shortly before he died.
Charting Dr. Itokawa
I have rectified Dr. Itokawa for 11 Libra, making the ascendant for the Pencil conjunct his North Node in the seventh house. Elementarily he has a strong air basis, showing his tendency for thinking long and hard on a problem before starting to work on it (low earth).
The Chart of dr hideo itokawa
His most aspected planet is the Moon showing that inspiration like the Lindbergh flight and then the article on the Space creates a large incentive for him to begin work. His least aspected planet is Neptune telling us that external influences, those things alien to his own imagination, do not make as much an impact upon him.
Jones Lines
- His line of vitality is square, or he needs to find out more about what intrigues him.
- His line of efficiency is absent, or he pays little mind to daily concerns. He would probably be characterized as the “absent minded professor.” It’s also why he probably did not marry; it did not seem important to him.
- His line of motivation is in opposition, or whatever intrigues him is always what he knows least about.
- His life of social significance 1 This is also called the Line of Culture , is trine, as he works well with like minded fellows.

This chart was revised and updated on 22 June 2023; previously, Dr. Itokawa’s chart was unrectified and had the default sunrise chart.
