The Buzz About Birthright Citizenship: A Political Perspective

Birthright citizenship is always a hot topic. It became a buzzword with Barry Goldwater in 1964 because he was born in a U.S. territory (Arizona did not become a state for another three years in 1912) . Four years later, Gov. George Romney of Michigan refueled the controversy as he was born in Colonia, Dublan, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, to American Mormon missionaries. Incredibly, it was not until forty years later that the issue became a fire keg when Senator John McCain of Arizona made a ruckus because he was born to a military family stationed at the Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone.

Now it is rearing its head again because Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has thrown his hat into the ring for the presidency; he was born in Canada. Now, in December 2025, it’s on the docket at the Supreme Court.

So, after all this ruckus, Senator Cruz posted his mother’s birth certificate to show his legal standing. While historically both parents had to be born in the US, now only one parent must have American natural citizenship. That is how President Obama scraped through (his father was born in Nigeria, his other in Kansas). But makes me wonder how Kamala Harris can run for president since neither of her parents was born here (her father in Jamaica, her mother from India). I’m sure though Congress will come up with something.

Mrs. Cruz has a cardinal natural disposition, suggesting that she is very action-oriented and does not really let the grass grow under her feet; she takes charge of situations and wants them to be successfully carried out. We saw that in her son Senator Cruz when offered a position on the Supreme Court, he turned it down, preferring to be in the “heat of the political fight.” I imagine he still harbors designs on being president¹.

Still, her cardinal disposition works well for a woman whose career was a nurse, as does her Ascendant in Scorpio. Mars is conjunct Neptune near her Midheaven, showing her desire to move when necessary to pursue her dreams (she also worked in Great Britain).

Her only son is in her fifth house with Uranus. Neptune is square with Uranus. This is typical for children born then. It is an aspect more generational than personal as it shows the problems of the changing times. Uranus though is important in her chart; its sextile to Saturn makes her a wheelbarrow, coupling the sense of duty (Neptune) with the need for self-expression. . Acorns do not fall far from the tree.
